New Brownlee Centre and Cycle Circuit complete

The ten-month, £5m investment is complete at the University’s Bodington Playing Fields in North Leeds. The new 1 mile (1.6km) cycle circuit is one of the longest in the country and sits alongside the Brownlee Centre; the UK’s first purpose-built triathlon training base, providing the first permanent home for the world-class Leeds Triathlon Centre.

Adrian Smith, Estates Project Manager said about the project:

“This has been a unique opportunity and project for Estate Services to deliver. Geo Houlton & Sons Ltd, the contractor have been very dedicated in delivering an exceptional result for the university. Throughout it all we have worked closely with the client to ensure we fully interpreted their requirements. It’s been incredibly exciting working on this project and on behalf of Estates Services we are delighted that this new facility really strengthens the sports facility provision at Leeds.”

Construction Director Dave Padden said: 

“Houlton were very excited to be involved in this project. The scheme offers students first class, state of the art facilities as well as continuing to provide grass roots sports in the wider community.

For us, the fact that Houlton, a long established company with a tradition of providing investment and opportunity for its own staff, were given the opportunity to be associated with the investment, the University and its partners have made to develop aspiring athletes of the future as well as existing Elite athletes, makes us immensely proud”

Investing further in our Central Teaching Spaces!

We will be investing a further £2m into our Central Teaching Spaces this summer. 19 lecture theatres and seminar rooms within the Roger Stevens, Chemistry and Michael Sadler buildings will undergo refurbishment to create modernised and inspiring places for our students to be taught in.

The project will be led by the Facilities Services Team and is set to be complete in time for the start of the autumn term. Works include the replacement of AV & IT as well as a general refresh of the spaces.

School of design

£4.4m investment in the School of Design

Plans to refurbish and significantly improve the home of the School of Design will commence in May.

The £4.4m investment, to reinvigorate spaces within the Clothworkers South building, is part of the School’s Colour Imaging Project. Various spaces across all floors of the building will undergo maintenance and refurbishment. New laboratories, exhibition areas and student spaces will be created.

 

The building will house state of the art research facilities focused on 3D Weaving, Creative and Technical Digital Print, Sustainability and Colour.

To minimise the disruption to students during the busy exam period, a significant amount of work is programmed to take place during the summer break.

Campus then and now: Leeds University Business School

We’ve been digging through our archive of old campus photos and found a few images that show the campus throughout the years. This month we’re focussing on the Business School.

Then: Grammar School, Leeds est. 1859

By 1857, the city of Leeds was growing prodigiously due to the Industrial Revolution. The city conditions were dirty and Harrison’s buildings inadequate for a Victorian education. Therefore in 1857 the decision was made by Rev. Alfred Barry (Headmaster) to move the school to new premises next to Woodhouse Moor.  (n.d). In Wikipedia. Retrieved April 2017

 

 

University Business School

Now: Leeds University Business School (2017)

Leeds University Business School is housed in the impressively renovated 19th century Maurice Keyworth Building on the western edge of the University of Leeds campus, which previously belonged to the Leeds Grammar School.
