Official openings mark success of buildings

This year has seen the official opening of two, multi-million pound refurbished buildings that were led and delivered by Estate Services.

The School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies along with the Institute for Transport Studies have been applauded for the significant improvements made to the buildings, resulting in modernised environments for students and staff.

Peter Morgan, an award-winning scriptwriter was among the scores of alumni returning to the University of Leeds’ School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies to celebrate the opening of its new home. The refurbishment of the listed building in University Road marks an investment of £7.6 million, bringing the School together in one site close to the heart of the campus. It provides students with an impressive, modernised environment including quality studio space, fully-equipped workshops, a multi-purpose project space and a large student common room.

Chris Grayling, the Secretary of State for Transport opened the £4m building for Institute for Transport Studies, which provides a new modern research and teaching space. Enhanced spaces have been created for PhD and post-doctoral researchers, to ensure that the University is supporting emerging talent alongside its world-class professors. The new building also marks 50 years since the discipline of transport studies was first established at Leeds.

“These are exciting times for transport policy and planning in the UK, and our world class Institute for Transport Studies is ideally placed to help shape this agenda and deliver innovative solutions” Professor Lisa Roberts, Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Architectural awards wins

Earlier this month, three University of Leeds projects were highly commended for their architectural prowess at the 26th Leeds architecture awards.

  • The installation of the untitled Bas-Relief sculpture on the side of the Stage@Leeds was highly commended in the public realm and landscape design category. Bodington Hall’s architects, Jones and Stocks, subcontracted Hubert Dalwood to create the frieze for the hall’s refectory block in 1961. The sculpture was saved and moved to Stage@Leeds and refurbished in spring 2016.
  • The Laidlaw Library received a commendation in the New Building Category.
  • The Multi–Storey Car Park was highly commended in the Young People’s Review category.

The prestigious awards recognise the contribution building and landscape design makes to the city. Nearly 80 nominations were received over 7 categories for the awards, with further honours given in the People’s Choice and Young People’s awards.

Engineering and Physical Sciences: Work commences on 20 March 2017

A programme of work will commence on 20 March to prepare for the £96m investment to create an integrated campus for Engineering and Physical Sciences.

To include new homes for the Schools of Computing and Physics & Astronomy, this investment will provide specialised teaching spaces and will be the hub for our new Bragg Centre, providing facilities and expertise to support multidisciplinary materials research involving physicists, chemists, biologists and engineers. This development will also integrate world-leading research in robotics and in Information, Communication and Technology (ICT).

Phase one of the project will see the demolition of the former Estates Building and the Old Boiler House which are located near the Old Mining building on Woodhouse Lane. Installation of hoardings may affect your current route to and from Engineering buildings.

Creating an integrated campus for Engineering and Physical Sciences

A programme of work will commence on 20 March to prepare for the £96m investment to create an integrated campus for Engineering and Physical Sciences. Staff, students and visitors are advised to plan their route as site hoardings will be in place and access routes to and from Engineering will change.

This project is the biggest single financial investment ever made on campus and is part of our £520m campus plan to help secure our position as one of the UK’s top ten research universities.

The new development will bring together research and teaching across Engineering and Physical Sciences, to inspire new ways of working across disciplines, strengthen industry collaboration and support world-class student education.

To include new homes for the Schools of Computing and Physics & Astronomy, this investment will also provide specialised teaching spaces and will be the hub for our new Bragg Centre, providing facilities and expertise to support multidisciplinary materials research involving physicists, chemists, biologists and engineers. This development will also integrate world-leading research in robotics and in Information, Communication and Technology (ICT)

Campus then and now

Campus then and now: University Square

We’ve been digging through our archive of old campus masterplan photos and found a few images that show the campus throughout the years. This month we’re focusing on University Square.

Now: University Square (2017)

The University’s Precinct is home to a new piece of sculpture by Sue Lawty, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Mitzi Cunliffe’s monumental Man-Made Fibres sculpture in 2016. Texta Texens is located in the walkway outside Clothworkers’ South, developing a dialogue with Cunliffe’s Man-Made Fibres above. It was created in collaboration with poet Helen Mort – Douglas Caster Cultural Fellow at the University 2014-2016 – and sculptor Dan Jones.

Engraved in the sculpture is Dr Mort’s poem ‘Texere’, the words literally becoming part of the weft and weave of the stonework, exploring the link between text and textiles, weaving conversations about life and learning, research and education, people and place on campus.
