Architectural awards wins

Earlier this month, three University of Leeds projects were highly commended for their architectural prowess at the 26th Leeds architecture awards.

  • The installation of the untitled Bas-Relief sculpture on the side of the Stage@Leeds was highly commended in the public realm and landscape design category. Bodington Hall’s architects, Jones and Stocks, subcontracted Hubert Dalwood to create the frieze for the hall’s refectory block in 1961. The sculpture was saved and moved to Stage@Leeds and refurbished in spring 2016.
  • The Laidlaw Library received a commendation in the New Building Category.
  • The Multi–Storey Car Park was highly commended in the Young People’s Review category.

The prestigious awards recognise the contribution building and landscape design makes to the city. Nearly 80 nominations were received over 7 categories for the awards, with further honours given in the People’s Choice and Young People’s awards.

Campus Developments in 2016

As the year draws to an end we take a look back on how campus has changed in the space of just 12 months.

The development of our estate and infrastructure remains a key factor in the University‘s ability to achieve its strategic goals. This sustained period of change and improvement is enabling us to respond to new challenges and opportunities to underpin our future success.

Major schemes completed in 2016

Large schemes progressed well

A number of large investment schemes have also seen part project completion during 2016 and have included the handover of two thirds of the Edward Boyle Library in autumn. A sizeable proportion of the School of Chemical and Process Engineering refurbishment has completed alongside the completion of Level 11 of the Worsley Building also including the opening of PURE café.

Art on Campus

In 2016 a number of significant artworks including some newly commissioned, restored and acquired on long-term loan arrived on campus, contributing to our vision of creating an inspirational campus.

We welcomed back one of the largest pieces of art – Untitled Bas-Relief, an aluminium sculpture by Hubert Dalwood. The work originally adorned the University’s Bodington Hall of residence. It has now been installed in a new home on the stage@leeds building.

Nearby is Dual Form by the great British sculptor Barbara Hepworth, on loan for five years from the Leeds Art Gallery.

Architect awards

University of Leeds shortlisted for Architectural Awards

Two of the University’s buildings have been shortlisted for prestigious architectural awards.
Laidlaw Library

The Laidlaw Library opened in spring 2015.

Shortlisted for a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 2016 Yorkshire Award is the Laidlaw Library. The Library is amongst eleven other buildings competing for the prestigious accolade of ‘Building of the Year’ which recognises buildings that demonstrate outstanding architecture. Judges will be visiting the Library over the next few weeks and a winner will be announced in April.

Alongside the Laidlaw, the multi-storey car park which opened earlier this year has also been recognised for its inspirational design.  The car park, which boasts an impressive bespoke exterior of aluminum cladding panels and feature façade lighting for distinct aesthetic effect, is shortlisted in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) 2016 Awards. As part of the process, judges visited the University to view the car park last month with a winner to be announced in May.

Dennis Hopper, Director of Facilities Management, commented:

“The University of Leeds is delighted to see our buildings being recognised in the RICS and RIBA Awards. To be shortlisted for these awards is testament to our ongoing commitment to create outstanding architectural buildings within our ambitious plan to create a world class campus.”

Multi-Storey Car Park now open

The new £10.5M multi-storey car park opened in the New Year.

Designed by CJCT architects, the new car park boasts an impressive bespoke exterior of aluminium cladding panels and feature façade lighting for distinct aesthetic effect. The scheme also comprises surrounding landscaping, including native hedgerows, pollinating plants and a green wall.

Dennis Hopper, Director of Facilities Management at the University of Leeds said,

“The nine level car park improves the quality and safety of parking for our students, staff and visitors. It’s also part of a wider £520M University investment in a transformative campus developments programme, which will deliver the University’s ambition of creating a world class campus.”

Paul Dodsworth, Business Unit Director for Wates Construction North East & Yorkshire, said:

“Building work on the University of Leeds’ new multi-storey car park has progressed at rapid pace. This is in no small part thanks to the project team, which has tightly managed the smooth transition throughout our acquisition of the project from Shepherd Construction.

“As a result, we have successfully facilitated the University in its plans to increase the car parking provision in time for the new term, which we hope will appropriately provide sufficient capacity for the foreseeable future.”
