Health Sciences Library collaborative learning area

New space for Health Sciences Library open

Last updated on 19 May 2025

One of the main study spaces in the Health Sciences Library has been transformed into a collaborative learning area following consultation with students.

Led by the Estates and Libraries teams, the £3 million refurbishment and build provides extra space for students studying for exams and is open to students from all faculties.

It is in contrast to other individually focused areas across campus, providing a place where students can study, have a drink and relax.

‘Investing in the needs of students’

Critically, the improved facilities feature increased accessibility, with new wheelchair access to the mezzanine floor.

Jen Wilson, Director of Campus Innovation for Masterplanning, Asset Management and Sustainability, working in the Facilities Directorate said:

“This refurbishment has been influenced by student feedback and is built to soften sound using carefully considered furniture and natural materials.

“The use of natural light helps to enhance wellbeing. It also aims to give users choice, with collaborative group spaces or refuge and reflection spaces.

“Through this work, we can gather data to inform the development of future campus initiatives and insights into space and service alignment.

“While investing in the needs of students now, we’re also learning valuable lessons for the future of the estate and the Campus Reimagined programme.”

Extra space during exams

University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection Masud Khokhar said:

“In line with our Student Education Strategy, this fantastic new space supports a range of learning styles and, we hope, engenders a stronger sense of belonging.

“Enhancing the Health Sciences Library to encourage collaborative learning and wellbeing is a strategic priority for us. I’m delighted with the result, especially as it provides an inspiring space for those currently studying for exams.”

The Health Sciences Library collaborative learning space is located on Level 7 of the Worsley Building and is open until midnight every day during termtime. See the Library website for full details of opening hours for all library sites across campus.

Wheelchair access to the mezzanine level is via a new door on the Worsley level 8 corridor. Out of normal working hours, a fob is available to access the lift to this floor.
