Temporary Closure of Vernon Road

23 October to 4 December

Essential work will take place on Vernon Road to extend the district heating main to the new Nexus building.

This work is part of the two-year, £38m investment scheme to construct Nexus; our new, sector-leading innovation and enterprise centre.

The work means there will be no access to the Multi-Storey car park from Woodhouse Lane.

  • Travelling from the north of the city will involve taking a slightly longer route, as access will be diverted via Calverley Street and the Willow Terrace Road entrance, over the Inner Ring Road bridge.
  • From 4pm each day, an alternative route, underneath Physics deck, will be opened to allow traffic to exit north via Woodhouse Lane.
  • Pedestrian access will remain open throughout the works.
  • HGV deliveries will also be affected due to the weak bridge crossing the Inner Ring Road at Calverley Street / Willow Terrace Road, which has a weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes.

Gas supply closure

The gas supply to the buildings listed below will be turned off from 10 August whilst Northern Gas Networks carry out the new connection to our main incoming gas meter in EC Stoner.

  • Garstang Building
  • Irene Manton Building
  • IT Services
  • Roger Stevens Building
  • Maths/Earth & Environment
  • L C Miall Building
  • Astbury Building
  • E C Stoner Building
  • Physics Research Deck
  • Staff Centre
  • Food Sciences Building (with Stead House)

Please bear with us as we carry out this maintenance. We need to shut down the gas supply to the Southern Precinct for 3 days to allow the gas pipe that has been diverted previously for Nexus to be connected by Northern Gas Network to our meter and purged throughout the buildings listed above.

Our gas contractor, Morgan Sindall, will be visiting the buildings to isolate gas services locally and to put up notices reminding occupants to turn off outlets and to leave them switched OFF until the work is complete, at which stage the notices will be removed. Please don’t try the outlets until this time which is expected to be late on Friday 10 August.

Closure of lift on Level 6 in EC Stoner

From Friday 2 June until Friday 27 October 2017 we will be refurbishing the area between rooms 6.74a to 6.62 on Level 6, to form the new IT Cluster.

As part of the work this means there will be no access to lift 48 on Level 6. This lift will travel between Level 7 – Level 11 only, during the construction period.

This work is to accommodate the planned £7.5m investment for the School of Earth and Environment to create multi–disciplinary meeting and teaching spaces for staff and PhD students.

For staff, students and visitors this will mean:

  • Using alternative lifts 46 and 181, as indicated on the map.
  • Using the most accessible route from the south side/MSCP which would be to enter Roger Stevens via the ramp at L7, take the lift to L10 Red Route and make your way to EC Stoner to use one of the lifts (46, 48 and 181) to get to your place of work.
  • Please note that Lift 181 is only accessible from L7

Vernon Road closure update

A one-way diversion will be in place daily from 4pm to 7pm to alleviate congestion.

We have seen that there has been a considerable amount of congestion around the multi-storey car park and Willow Terrace, resulting in colleagues experiencing delays to their journey to and from the University.

This has been due to the closure of Vernon Road whilst emergency work takes place until the 15th May.  The work involves repair work to an old Victorian brick culvert adjacent to the Multi-Storey car park and also the diversion of a gas main that enters EC Stoner but currently crosses under the Nexus building site.

To alleviate the congestion on Campus, from tomorrow 27th April, we will be putting in place an alternative one-way diversion during the hours of 4pm to 7pm only. Please note that this route will not be accessible during the morning and current traffic restrictions will remain in place.

The afternoon diversion will take traffic along Finsbury Road, which goes under the EC Stoner building arch and under physics Deck, back onto Vernon Road leading up to the Woodhouse Lane main entrance. Due to the complex nature of this route, the junctions around this area will require marshalling to ensure the safety of pedestrians and drivers.

We apologise once again for the inconvenience being caused and would like to thank all colleagues for their continued patience at this time.
