New mural is centrepiece for Garstang refurbishment

The foyer in the Garstang Building has been transformed into a collaborative area following consultation with students.

A new artwork unveiled today in the foyer of the School of Geography is the result of a collaboration between students and a local artist.

It complements the vibrant new area created by the Estates team as part of the Campus Improvement Programme.

The new-look space was created in response to student feedback that the area felt underused and lacked a clear identity.

David Oldroyd, Head of Capital Programme Delivery and Design, said:

“The new design creates a welcoming environment where students can relax, connect with friends and take a break from their studies.

“The flexible layout includes open-plan areas, collaborative zones and private study booths.

“By delivering spaces like this, we’re not only responding to current student needs but also learning how they want to experience our campus buildings.”

The artwork has been created by Leeds-based artist Melody Murals and depicts a journey through diverse urban and rural landscapes, highlighting the bond between people and nature.

It features iconic University buildings such as Roger Stevens, LC Miall and the Sustainable Garden.

Students helped shaped the mural’s design through workshops with the artist, ensuring it reflected their identity, pride in their subject and connection to the School.

Dr Clare Woulds, Professor of Marine Biogeochemistry from the School of Geography, said:

“We wanted to create a space that reflects who we are as a School and the impact Geography has beyond academia.

“The mural captures the spirit of our subject – both its history and its importance for the future – while helping students feel a strong sense of belonging here in Garstang.”

The Estates team echoed this collaborative spirit, with student experience shaping the project from the ground up.

The Garstang Building project is part of the University’s wider effort to enhance teaching, learning and social environments across campus.
