Chemistry student lounge transformed
Last updated on 3 October 2025
The Chaston Chapman Lounge in the Chemistry Building has been completed as part of the Campus Improvement Programme.
The main student lounge in the University’s Chemistry Building has been refurbished following student feedback.
Delivered by the Estates team, the Chaston Chapman Lounge upgrade is part of the Campus Improvement Programme to create an upgraded campus experience for students.
Students highlighted a need for more breakout style spaces across campus to connect with friends, study between lectures and sit to eat lunch.
Design to meet student needs
A key part of the fit-out is the lounge’s new muted colour palette, using tranquil hues to foster a calm atmosphere to enhance student wellbeing.
The redesign includes flexible furniture such as seating booths, quiet zones and modular seating that allow the space to adapt to both everyday student use and events held by the School.
Investing in our campus for students
At its heart, this investment is about improving the student experience. Standout features include enhanced lighting and improved entrance accessibility.
The floorplan of the lounge is designed around how students use the space, pairing an easy flow with a balanced mix of social and study areas.
Mark Wilson, Development Project Manager (Capital Improvement Programme), said:
“Accessibility, appearance and comfort for students are at the forefront of the Estates team’s investment to transform key areas around campus, creating spaces we hope will be loved by students.”
“These spaces have been designed with flexibility in mind, so they can be used in a variety of ways – like during upcoming open days, where we hope they’ll give visitors a real sense of the friendly, welcoming atmosphere we’re creating.”
Refurbishment & future use
Work began in early 2025, delivered by contractor Morgan Sindall.
Appointed by the University, they are working under a wider vision to implement a social value plan that ensures the project benefits the wider Leeds community.
Upgrades to the Chemistry Building entrance are also underway, with completion due in November 2025.
