New LC Miall teaching lab opens to students
Last updated on 10 April 2026
The teaching lab in Biological Sciences has been transformed into a collaborative area following consultation with the faculty.
A new teaching laboratory for Biological Sciences demonstrates the high standard of facilities being achieved across the University, marking another milestone in the ongoing campus improvement works programme.
Delivered by the Estates Team in the Facilities Directorate, this state-of-the-art learning environment supports students in elevating their learning experience while at the University of Leeds.
A space designed with students in mind
Designed with direct input from staff and students in the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the new lab includes:
A mobile lectern that projects demonstrations to screens around the room, ensuring visibility for all students.
Flat-bottomed sinks that prevent equipment from tipping.
Knee-operated taps that reduce mess and improve hygiene.
Accessibility woven into the design
Accessibility is a key feature of the teaching Lab, including height-adjustable benches and sinks which make them fully wheelchair accessible and adaptable to a range of physical needs.
These enhancements reflect the University’s commitment to inclusive learning environments that support every student.
Raising the bar for teaching environments
Mark Wilson, Development Project Manager (Capital Improvement Programme), said:
“Developed in collaboration with faculty colleagues and our Estates team, this new lab was designed to meet the practical needs of teaching and accessibility. It’s now in full use, with students already benefiting from the improved learning environment.”
